The Hoss Mountain Stringband is a dynamic bluegrass ensemble based in Victoria, British Columbia. Formed through connections within the local bluegrass community, the band has become a staple in the region’s music scene. The ensemble is multi-generational, and includes two members of the area’s famed long standing bluegrass band, the Clover Point Drifters. Perhaps due to the mix of younger and more seasoned musicians, their performances are characterized by high-energy renditions of both traditional and contemporary bluegrass tunes. Their music is also enriched by various influences such as old-time and swing.
The band consists of Paul Moquin on guitar, Mike Kraft on banjo, Alan Law on dobro, Kris Boyd on mandolin, Mark Johnson on bass and Ben Barrett-Forrest on violin.
Ella Korth is a singer-songwriter and driving guitar and banjo player. Growing up in a family heavily immersed in the acoustic music scene created a lifelong passion for both bluegrass and old-time music, which Ella brings to her craft.
Recently, Ella has been touring as a side musician with Leith Ross in Europe, the US and Canada. Ella played guitar in Grammy Award winner John Reischman’s band at the Canadian Folk Music Awards and filled in on country telecaster with Boy Golden and Fontine at over the summer. Ella has also been playing in Madeleine Roger and Le Ren’s bands. She played on Juno Award winner Trent Freeman’s EP alongside John Reischman, banjo extraordinaire Allison de Groot, and Alan Mackie.
With her own musical project, Ella Korth has performed across Canada, playing numerous Bluegrass and Folk Festivals. In Spring of 2024, Ella recorded her first record, full of original songs in Nashville, TN. It is set to be released in early 2025.
